Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Goals for 2024

I set myself some lofty bookish goals in last year’s post! Here’s how I ended up doing:

  1. Move from Goodreads to StoryGraph. ✔️
  2. Inventory the books I own. ❌
  3. Connect more deeply with the books I read by taking the time to review them. ✔️
  4. Try joining a book club at my local independent bookstore. ❌
  5. Buddy read a book with a friend. ❌
  6. Connect with my online community more and comment on other bookish/library blogs at least once a week. ❌
  7. Support anti-censorship efforts and organizations. ✔️
  8. Support bookish BIPOC and LGBTQ communities. ✔️
  9. Finally get around to blogging about the latest and greatest early math picture books for storytime! ❌
  10. Launch a Junior Bricks and Books Club for Grades K-2 at my library! ✔️

My One Word for 2023 had a big influence on my goals last year: Connection.

Connection

I wanted to slow down and spend more time with the books I read. I wanted to connect with fellow book lovers online and in my community. Which I did… in a way I never expected! The fight for the right to read came to my home front in April. Rallying my community against book banners consumed most of my time and energy. Moving out of state consumed what little was left, hence why I completed none of the 2023 reading challenges I signed up for. Moving really ruins a reading life!

Like last year, my One Word for 2024 guides my new bookish goals: Explore.

  1. Explore the books I own. Inventory them, read them, and most of all… weed them! I have much less bookshelf space after moving.
  2. Explore books written for adults. Now that I don’t have to do monthly new #KidLit booktalks for work, I want to reclaim my reading life!
  3. Explore nonfiction. Dive deep into subjects that interest me!
  4. Explore some recent professional literature in the library/education field. It’s been awhile since I read a good book for professional development!
  5. Explore and organize the 5,775 titles on my TBR list. Yikes!
  6. Explore local bookstores! Check out all the local indies I can in my new state.
  7. Explore my new library community! Visit new libraries and make new professional connections.
  8. Explore new places to read! Find cozy coffee shops and outside spaces to kick back and relax with a book in my new city.
  9. Explore my thoughts. Write more reflective blog posts!
  10. Explore StoryGraph. I moved over from Goodreads last year and I LOVE it, but I feel like I still don’t know how to use many of the app’s features. Completing the Onboarding Challenge should help with that!

  1. I commend you on your goals! I didn’t make any bookish goals last year, and I haven’t officially this year, though I do think you’ve inspired me a bit! I would like to be more consistent with my blogging, I do enjoy writing on my blog, and for a while I felt a bit discouraged because I didn’t feel like I was getting enough “engagement” – but after a bit of reflection, I’ve decided to focus more on writing as a form of expression. If other people read and enjoy or find value in what I’ve shared, that’s wonderful, but I’m going to focus more on having fun and sharing things I find interesting. Not everything has to be about the “likes” or “clicks”! 😀

    1. I agree, blogging for personal enjoyment is the way to go! And you never know who is reading. I rarely get likes or comments on my posts, but the other day someone in the Storytime Solidarity Facebook group said they use my blog all the time! If you’re looking for more loose and fun bookish goals, I really enjoyed this recent Top Ten Tuesday post: https://www.ladyinreadwrites.com/10-fun-ways-to-be-more-bookish-realistic-goals/.

  2. Oh … Jessica, I just realized you have mentioned my TTT in your comments as well here! Thanks so much…
Love your explore theme for goals this year.. I have zero idea of the number of books on my TBR but 5775 is certainly yikes!! I don’t want to go looking to find out what my total might be at this point.. it just is..
