Yes, I know penguins and polar bears live on opposite poles (a fact I always share with my storytime crowd). But these two animals are just so fun to pair together for storytime!

Read: Polar Bear’s Underwear by Tupera Tupera
Polar Bear can’t find his underwear! Where could they be? This laugh-out-loud story is always a crowd pleaser!
Sing: Frozen Penguin (Flannelboard)
Speaking of silly animals in clothes… We had such a small crowd this evening, I passed out penguin’s winter wear and had the kids bring up a piece during each verse.
Then we did the penguin dance!
Sing: Penguin Dance by Jack Hartmann
Play: Chicken Dance (Shaker Eggs)
After the penguin dance, I passed out shaker eggs and we practiced waddling with the eggs between our feet. Then we had an egg waddle race across the room and back!
Read: It’s a Penguin! OR It’s a Polar Bear! by Kerry Dinmont (Vote)
I love Lerner’s Bumba Books line! These photo-illustrated nonfiction books for emergent readers are great storytime selections. Tonight they wanted to read more about penguins.
Lit Tip: Print Motivation and the Power of Choice
Grown-ups, research shows that when kids get to choose WHAT they read, they read much more often AND are more likely to understand what they’re reading! Giving your child reading choices helps them become better lifelong readers.
My group was tuckered out, so no bonus book for anyone tonight!
