Sensory Play Storytime: Snow

I’m excited to try a new kind of storytime at my library! This storytime is followed by sensory play stations that stimulate various senses. It’s been a big hit so far!

Sing: Good Morning to You*

Welcome/Introduction

Sing: If You’re Happy & You Know It…*

Sing: If You’re Ready for a Story…*

Read: I’m Going to Build a Snowman by Jashar Awan

My new favorite winter read-aloud!

Flannelboard: Building a Snowman?

The kids loved helping me assemble a flannel snowman!

Flannelboard: A Chubby Little Snowman…

A little bunny smelled that carrot nose and came creeping out of my storytime bag…

Sing: Hat, Jacket, Pants & Boots

Tune: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes

Hat, jacket, pants and boots.
Pants and boots!
Hat, jacket, pants and boots.
Pants and boots!
When it’s cold out there,
This is what we wear.
Hat, jacket, pants and boots.
Pants and boots!

Once we were dressed for the weather, I handed out scarves and we danced liked snowflakes!

Scarves: Dance Like Snowflakes

Tune: Frere Jacques

Dance like snowflakes, dance like snowflakes
In the air, in the air.
Whirling, twirling, snowflakes.
Whirling, twirling, snowflakes.
Here and there, here and there.

Scarves: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy

I turned this into a stop and go song by periodically pausing the music!

Scarves: Snowflakes, Snowflakes

Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

Snowflake, snowflake in the sky,
Love to watch you floating by.
Down you fall upon the ground,
Down you fall without a sound.
Snowflake, snowflake in the sky,
Love to watch you floating by!

Breathe: Hot Chocolate Breaths

Read: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

Peter’s snowy day ends with a warm bubble bath, setting the stage perfectly for bubble time!

Play: Bubbles

Sensory Play Stations:

  • Snowman Search & Find: I hid a bunch of snowmen inside a big plastic bin full of fake snow. They were definitely more interested in throwing snow than in finding the snowmen! I’m still finding fake snow in the library. 😂
  • Play Dough Snowmen: The kids enjoyed making their own snow creatures from play dough and loose parts. I’m particularly fond of the snowman with multiple eyes!
  • Snowman Flannelboard: One kiddo just did NOT want to leave this activity. Not even play dough or fake snow could tempt them away!

  2. Hi. I love the layout of your program and plan to do a “Winter in July” program this summer. Would you share what you used for your snowmen? Is it air dough?
