Baby Storytime Spotlight: Beeps and Bangs

This week I covered for one of my staff and got to host my first Fun for Ones Storytime! What a difference between these walkers and my regular lapsit Book Babies. Besides the obvious mobility differences, the one year-olds were much more vocal and interested in our books!

Sing: So Early in the Morning*

Sing: Hello Friends*

Welcome/Gratitude

Sing: When Cows Get Up in the Morning*

We have a large stash of Lakeshore’s big mouth animal puppets that we pass out for this song. After every animal gets a turn, our friends wake up and make noise all together!

Rhyme: Hickory Dickory Dare

Hickory Dickory Dare,
The COW flew up in the air!
Farmer Brown soon brought them down,
Hickory Dickory Dare.

Repeat with other puppets

Sing: Put Your Puppet on Your Heart

Tune: If You’re Happy and You Know It…

Put your puppet on your heart,
On your heart.
Put your puppet on your heart,
On your heart.
Put your puppet on your heart,
What a lovely way to start!
Put your puppet on your heart,
On your heart.

Repeat:

Put your puppet on your knee…
You’ll both be filled with glee…

Put your puppet on your toes…
Now move it to your nose…

Put your puppet on your head…
Put your puppet straight to bed…

Give your puppet a big hug…

Sing: If You’re Ready for a Story…*

Read: The Baby Goes Beep by Rebecca O’Connell and Ken Wilson-Max (Picture Book & Lap Books)

You know what else goes beep… 🚍

Sing: The Wheels on the Bus

The wheels on the bus go round and round,
Round and round, round and round.
The wheels on the bus go round and round,
All through the town!

Repeat:

horn goes beep
turn signal goes blink
wipers go swish
people bounce up and down
babies cry “wah, wah, wah”
grown-ups say “I love you”

After we finished, I realized we forgot to sing the verse about wipers. Oops! It’s always raining in Oregon. You can’t drive without wipers! The grown-ups chuckled and we sang another verse.

Bounce: A Hippopotamus Got on a City Bus

A hip, a hip, a hippopotamus
Got on, got on, got on a city bus
And all, and all, and all the people said,
“You’re squishing us!” (hug baby)

A sheep, a sheep, a sheep got on the bus
and all, and all, and all the people said,
“Baaaack up!” (lean back)

A cow, a cow, a cow got on the bus
And all, and all, and all the people said,
“Mooooove over!” (tilt baby to the side)

A horse, a horse, a horse got on the bus
And all, and all, and all the people said,
“Hey NEIGHbor!”

A hen, a hen, a hen got on the bus.
And all, and all, and all the people said,
“Buck-buck-buck buckle up!”

A snake, a snake, a snake got on the bus.
And all, and all, and all the people said,
“Sssssssit down!”

EXTRA VERSES: STORYTIME SOLIDARITY

Kudos to all those creative folks in the Storytime Solidarity Facebook Group! We had lots of fun with these extra verses.

Sing: If You’re Ready for a Story…*

Read: The Babies on the Bus by Karen Katz

Sing: Talk, Read, Sing, Write, Play*

Lit Tip: Babies Love Books with Beeps and Bangs!

Grown-ups, be sure to look out for books like this when you’re browsing the shelves! Babies love books with fun sounds. Reading books and making sounds together helps your baby learn to talk NOW and learn to read LATER on!

Several of the older ones started joining in as we sang our way through the story! Or at least, they sang “round and round” nonstop. 😂

Play: Bubbles

Stay and Play

  1. I love the extra Hippo verses! I started doing this one with my gassy baby as a leg exercise – it works really well! I was also inspired to add a pig verse – “oink we glad to see you!” and I give a big snuffly oinky kiss/raspberry on her belly!
