My First STEAM Family Fun with Slime

I recently blogged about my latest slime program. Today, I’m looking back at the first time I did slime! I’ve learned a lot since then. Nowadays we have just as much fun, but I don’t spend hours afterwards cleaning up the mess!

I lovingly remember this first program as “free-for-all slime.” I gave the kids a basic slime recipe, along with a multitude of optional ingredients:

Basic Slime Recipe

  • 1 cup glue
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp saline solution

Materials

  • Baby Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Bowls
  • Dish Soap
  • Food Coloring
  • Glue
  • Glitter
  • Gloves
  • Googly Eyes
  • Measuring Cups/Spoons
  • Saline Solution
  • Shaving Cream
  • Water

How It Went: Then and Now

I LOVED the freedom kids had to explore and experiment with different ingredients! I would definitely do this program again, but with a few key changes.

The first lesson I learned is COVER EVERYTHING! Cover the floor and tables with tarps and plastic tablecoths. These days I dish out less glue (1/4 cup instead of a full cup). I also arrange the room differently, making each table self-sufficient. The first time I did slime, I set up supplies at different stations, meaning kids had to walk with their slime across the room. This led to A LOT of spills onto unprotected carpet.

What’s your favorite slime recipe? How do you manage the messy fun? I’d love to know in the comments below!

  1. What a fun program! I did a bit of slime making for a library open house style event in 2018, but it was just one piece of a STEAM showcase, so I mixed up one bowl of slime while the kids added ingredients to it. (My sister bought me some slime for my birthday earlier this year, as these days I’m in love with Tiktok slime videos 😂)
