Top Ten Tuesday: New To Me Authors Last Year

I discovered so many new-to-me authors in 2023! It was such a joy to read adult books once I changed jobs and had time to read something besides kids’ books.

Becky Chambers

I just found out cozy sci-fi is a THING and I am so here for it! Huge thanks to my #CripLib buddy Brea for introducing me to Becky Chambers.

Brandon Sanderson

Baby’s first Brandon Sanderson! I’ve heard Sanderson’s regular readers didn’t much care for The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, but I loved it.

Freya Marske

I bought The Last Binding series from a local indie while we were staying at an Airbnb and I was separated from my all my books. Impulse buy for the win!

Grady Hendrix

More thanks to Brea, although I haven’t read her actual recommendation yet! I figured I would start with Hendrix’s earlier works and read my way up.

Isabel Cañas

Came for the cover, stayed for the story. I just happened to see Vampires of El Norte on the new bookshelf at the library. I’m so glad I picked it up!

JRR Tolkien

I started listening to the LOTR audiobooks during our cross-country move. Dare I say it? I actually liked the movies better.

Martha Wells

I’m pretty sure Brea also clued me into Martha Wells’ amazing Murderbot Diaries. I loved listening to these audiobooks. Kevin R. Free is the best narrator!

TJ Klune

I didn’t much care for The House in the Cerulean Sea (even setting aside the cultural appropriation controversy, Klune is so heavy-handed with his message) but I absolutely adored In the Lives of Puppets.

Travis Baldree

Baldree was my first introduction to cozy fantasy. Now I’m hooked!

Victor LaValle

I couldn’t wait to read Lone Women after reading Alex Brown’s review. Are you an avid SFF reader? Make sure to follow Alex at Punk-Ass Book Jockey for the best recs!

Top Ten Tuesday

The Artsy Reader Girl currently hosts Top Ten Tuesday, an original feature created by The Broke and the Bookish. Every week TTT has a different topic, and everyone who links up has to create a link of ten items that fit that topic.

  1. This is a safe space, and it’s ok to admit you liked a movie adaptation better than the source material. ;-D I also much preferred the film version of LOTR to the books, though for me it’s the reverse with The Hobbit, where I did not like the films, but really enjoyed the book as a kid.
