Baby Storytime Spotlight: Hooves, Hands & Feet

Back with another throwback, pre-pandemic baby storytime plan! Writing this post brought back BIG bittersweet feelings… this was my very last in-person storytime before we closed to the public on March 15th. It was a very weird day.

Sing: Good Morning to You*

Welcome

Rhyme: This is Big, Big, Big*

Gosh our babies are getting SO BIG, so fast!

Bounce: Mix a Pancake*

Must be all those pancakes they have for breakfast!

Sing: I Wake Up My Hands…*

Read: Ten Horse Farm by Robert Sabuda

The babies were absolutely captivated by the pop-ups in this book!

Rhyme: Pitty Patty Polt (x2)

Pitty patty polt,
Shoe the little colt,
Here a nail,
There a nail,
Pitty patty polt.

After our horses were shod, we took a horseback ride.

Sing: Walkin Ol’ Joe by The Old Town School of Folk Music

Before doing this theme, I never realized how many animals have hooves… even hippos!

Bounce: A Hippopotamus Got on a City Bus (Puppets)

A hip, a hip, a hippopotamus
Got on, got on, got on a city bus
And all, and all, and all the people said,
“You’re squishing us!” (hug baby)
A sheep, a sheep, a sheep got on a city bus
and all, and all, and all the people said,
“Baaaack up!”
A cow, a cow, a cow got on a bus
And all, and all, and all the people said,
“Mooooove over!”

Humans don’t have hooves… but we do have hands and feet!

Sing: Hands Are Clapping

Tune: Skip To My Lou

Hands are clapping, clap, clap, clap
Hands are clapping, clap, clap, clap
Hands are clapping, clap, clap, clap
Clap your hands, my darling!

Repeat:
Toes are tapping, fingers are wiggling, eyes are hiding “peek-a-boo”

I had the grown-ups turn their babies to face them for this song so we could play peek-a-boo!

Rhyme: These Are Baby’s Fingers… (x2)

These are baby’s fingers,
These are baby’s toes,
This is baby’s belly button,
Round and round it goes.

Tickle: Cheek Chin, Cheek Chin

Cheek, chin, cheek, chin, cheek, chin, nose.
Cheek, chin, cheek, chin, cheek, chin, toes.
Cheek, chin, cheek, chin, up baby goes!

Read: Toesy Toes by Sarah Tsiang

Orca Books is one of my favorite board book publishers. They have so many excellent diverse books!

Rhyme: Tick Tock, Tick Tock, I’m a Little Cuckoo Clock*

Look at that clock! Where does our time together go?

Sing: Goodbye, Goodbye*

Stay and Play

This weekly storytime theme was a first for me – ungulates! I had lots of fun figuring out how to adapt this theme for babies. What unusual storytime themes have you tried? Would love to learn more in the comments below!
