Baby Storytime Spotlight: Baby Bakers

I am loving all the new baby rhymes I’m learning as I challenge myself to try a different theme for baby storytime every week! Here’s how baking with the babies went last Friday:

*Sing: Good Morning to You

Welcome & Introductions: What’s a Question You Have About Baby?

Today I encouraged caregivers to share a question about their babies if they’d like. This led to some really great conversations and connections later during play time! 😍

I am still waiting for someone to answer my question about why babies like it when you pretend to eat their appendages, btw.

*Rhyme: This is Big, Big, Big (x2)

Those babies are getting SO BIG! Being the first day of winter break, we had lots of older siblings in attendance, so I demonstrated how to do this rhyme once with a baby in the lap and once as a walker.

Rhyme: Mix a Pancake (x2)

Those babies must be eating breakfast every day to be getting so big! Let’s make some pancakes. We bounced for the first part of the rhyme, hugged as we popped baby in the pan, and then carefully tossed our pancake babies in the air:

Mix a pancake.

Stir a pancake.

Pop it in a pan!

Fry a pancake.

Toss a pancake.

Catch it if you can!

*Sing: I Wake Up My Hands…

Read: Pat-a-Cake by Annie Kubler

Rhyme: Pat-a-Cake

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake

Baker man.

Bake me a cake as fast as you can!

Roll it.

Stretch it.

Mark it with a B.

Then put it in the oven for baby and me!

By the way, I LOVE how Intellidance shows how to do this traditional rhyme 3 different ways with babies! Check out the video here.

Sing: I’m a Little Teapot (x2)

I’m a little teapot short and stout.

Here is my handle, here is my spout.

When I get all steamed up, hear me shout.

Just tip me over and pour me out!

Rhyme: Handy Dandy Sugar and Candy

This was another great rhyme for both the babies and the big kids in the room:

Handy dandy, sugar and candy,

We all pop up!

Handy dandy, sugar and candy,

We all come down.

Handy dandy, sugar and candy,

We all pop out!

Handy dandy, sugar and candy,

We all pop in.

Rhyme: Down Around the Corner at the Bakery Shop

Kiddos big and small both loved when my puppet pals looked for treats around the room! Especially when dog sniffed all over and nibbled on their toes. 🙂

Rhyme: Round and Round the Batter Bowl (x2)

Round and round the batter bowl.

One, two, three!

A little here, a little there.

As tasty as can be!

Read: Yummy Yucky by Leslie Patricelli

The older siblings especially enjoyed this story! When we got to the burgers vs. boogers page, one brother decided to share that this boogers were actually quite yummy. 😆

Sing: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (scarves) x2

All the babies I know sure are messy eaters! Let’s clean them off from head to toes. This was another fun song for both the big kiddos and the babies, especially when we sped things up the second time through.

Play: Peekaboo (scarves)

Now let’s take those towel scarves and play peekaboo!

Lit Tip: Building Print Motivation Through Play

Grown-ups, one of the reasons we play after storytime is because we want your baby to have fun! Learning to read feels far away, but the more positive experiences your baby has at storytime NOW, the more they will love books – and the more motivated they will be to crack the reading code later!

Stay and Play
