Lapsit Baby Storytime Spotlight: Shapes

I recently saw a post in the Storytime Solidarity Facebook Group about my blog. Apparently people still read this thing! 😮 It inspired me to pick up the pen (put fingers to keyboard?) and blog again!

Sing: Good Morning to You*

Welcome & Gratitude**

Sing: So Early in the Morning…*

Sing: Hello, Friends*

Sing: Who is Here Today?*

Introductions/Sharing: Something New

Today I encouraged the caregivers to share something new as they introduced themselves and their babies: a new milestone, a new experience, etc. It’s amazing how much happens in between the week that we see each other!

Rhyme: This is Big, Big, Big*

Bounce: Toast in the Toaster*

Cuddle: You Be the Ice Cream (Breakfast Style)*

Optional Tune: I’m a Little Teapot
You be the lemon,
And I’ll be the squeezer! (hug)
You be the EGGO,
And I’ll be the freezer! (hug)
You be the sausage,
And I’ll be the roll! (hug)
You be the cereal,
And I’ll be the bowl! (hug)
You be the coffee,
And I’ll be the mug! (hug)
You be the baby,
And I’ll be the hug!

I recently took one of my favorite baby cuddle rhymes from Jbrary and gave it a breakfast-style twist! 🥣

Sing: If You’re Ready for a Story…*

Read: Giant Pop Out Shapes

Sing: Talk, Read, Sing, Write, Play*

Lit Tip: Picking Books for Baby

Grown-ups, did you notice how many of your babies reached for the pop-outs? Picking playful books with fun features like pop-outs or flaps is a great way to get your little one interested in books and reading!

Then we sang about the shapes in our book to this tune:

Sing: Did You Ever See a Shape?

Tune: Did You Ever See a Lassie?
Did you ever see a circle,
A circle, a circle?
Did you ever see a circle?
It looks like a wheel!
(repeat with other shapes)

Speaking of circles…

Sing: The Wheels on the Bus

You know what else is round? BELLY BUTTONS!

Tickle Rhyme: These Are Baby’s Fingers

These are baby’s fingers,
These are baby’s toes,
This is baby’s belly button,
Round and round it goes.

Read: My Shapes / Mis Formas by Rebecca Emberley (Lapsit Board Books)

One of the grown-ups started singing the text to the shape song we did earlier, and the others all joined in! The way my heart swelled with pride. I’m always encouraging my caregivers to sing books to their babies, and now they’re doing it without any prompting from me at all!

The crescent moon page in our board book inspired us to sing…

Sing: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Play: Bubbles

Stay and Play
