Junior Bricks and Books Club: Dragons Love Tacos!

At long last! This summer, I finally launched a Junior Bricks and Books Club for Ages 5-8. It feels like the younger siblings of my tweens have been asking for this program for FOREVER. One particularly persistent young patron even presented me with a proposal!

Junior BBC Proposal

Pamphlet: Jooer Books and Briks Idies (Junior Books and Bricks Ideas) filled with picture book title suggestions.

Unlike our tween club (in which kids read the book in advance), I start with a read-aloud for Junior Bricks and Books. Then I introduce a building challenge related to the book. Kids are welcome to try the challenge, or free build something else from their imaginations.

We read Dragons Love Tacos for our inaugural meeting:

Our challenge? Fill a plate with your favorite food – made from bricks, of course!

Many kids did complete the challenge:

Junior BBC Watermelon

Junior BBC Noodles

Buttered Pasta Noodles LEGO® Reproduction

Junior BBC Candy

Smarties and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup LEGO® Reproduction

Others decided to build a dragon, an airplane, a house, a house for the dragon…

I absolutely love our Tween Bricks and Books Club, but it’s a lot of prep work. Junior Bricks and Books is definitely more chill. Plus I get to do a small storytime, which I’ve missed doing on a regular basis. I can’t wait for our next meeting!
